Desktop Widgets

A desktop widget is a small footprint application, which resides on the user’s desktop using a small desktop space and computer resources, such as the Hard Disk Drive and Random Access Memory.

A desktop widget provides relevant information to the user in a non-intrusive manner. Basically, desktop widgets enable the user view on demand, capsuled information from predetermined data sources. Ideally, a desktop widget presents personalized content, based on the user’s preferences.

Most of the desktop widgets are available to downloads from the vendors’ Web sites. Desktop widgets, depending on the functionality they provide, may serve a useful purpose. Vendors are trying hard to find out how to deliver content that aids users in their work place rather than having just a jazz value.

There are many possibilities for desktop widgets to assist a user in his area of work by delivering relevant, filtered information right on the user’s desktop. A desktop widget is supposed to beam the most important information that a user requires on a day to day basis.

It could be said that the original desktop widgets were the link counters and advertising banners that grew up alongside the early web for distribution purposes.
