Out Of Range

Get out of Range help from seniors.

Sometimes the frantic pace of the modern world makes us yearn for a time when life was slower and less complicated, and people had a stronger affinity towards nature! That is the feeling the owners of this beach home wanted to create. A vast expanse of an ocean and the beach were already there just across the property. Because the intended site of the house had another house between the beach and the owners' property, it was necessary to raise the house by 18"-20". Lifting up the entire home was the best way to ensure a clear view of the ocean.

Rough-hewn granite steps lead up to an open foyer. A wide aluminium overhang prevents too much sun or rain from entering the house. The owners wanted a large deck to be an extension of the living area, so huge glazed sliding doors open out of the living room into the deck area. A solid railing creates a semi-enclosed area that feels like a room, while allowing views of the surrounding ocean.

The pyramid style effect can be seen from the street front, where the house rises up from behind the compound wall. The owners took a special interest in the interior of their home, talking care of the design themselves. The wall colours were selected to provide a warm but neutral backdrop to the selection of furnishings. Furnishings were chosen to given the home a relaxed feel.

The dining room shares the flexibility of doubling up as a bar with a kangaroo skin backdrop. This takes care the entertaining area. The master bedroom is actually on the second storey. In order to bring more openness into the room, dormer windows were incorporated. The master ensuite is finished with a soft, powder blue, geometric patterned tile which tones in with the Mexican floor pavers. Large windows extending down to its edge afford bathers a view of the ocean.

Accross the living room is the guest bedroom. Again cleverly designed so that you can see the ocean. The kitchen has a solid granite bench top. Although the kitchen forms part of the living/bar area, it is shielded by a wall of cupboards, allowing meals to be prepared out of view.
The beach side house is where one can enjoy the simple pleasures of life, away from the hassles of city living with the focus being on simplicity. The landscaping is also an essential element in helping to create a sense of sanctuary - from the entrance gate to the same, at the end of a paved driveway, to the carport leading to the caretakers chambers.
Extensive glazing helps ensure the house is light and airy while the large deck and overhangs provide summer shade. Although the construction presented many challenges, you have a sense of arrival when you enter this house
